WoW Rogue Guide

Poppasmurph, 60 Rogue Stormreaver

Rogue - Overview

Rogues are a melee class that deal massive damage at close range. They have the ability to stealth, sneak up, and surprise their enemies. They are also masters of escaping fights when they feel that they can't win. They can use their poisons to take away their opponents range advantages over them. Rogues are a bonus to have in groups because they can pick lock doors and chests plus disarm traps. They can only wear up to leather armor but their high agility and dodge rating makes up for it. Learning to execute effective combination moves during combat is key. For grouping, you will need to learn how to control your aggro or the enemies will always be attacking you instead of the main tank.

How to Level a Rogue

Leveling a Rogue can be challenging because they do not have a pet and can't heal but when used correctly they can deal enough damage to end battles quickly. The biggest trouble you will have is PVE'ing 2 or more non-humanoid enemies at once or 3 or more humanoids (assuming you use SAP). Choosing weapons is very important and a very controversial aspect of the Rogue class. Play with whatever weapons you feel comfortable with and ignore the crowd; it's more enjoyable that way. For more information on leveling a rogue check out our Rogue Leveling Guide

The Talent Tree at Level 70

Determining your final talent build when you reach max level is one that can take trial and error as well as hours of indecisiveness and second-guessing yourself. The main determining factor of what talent build you will use is not only what weapons you like but what the characters main purpose will be in the World of Warcraft. Will the character be used for raids, pvp, farming gold, or a combination. Using our Rogue Talent Guide can help you cut off hours of this process.

Raid/Instance Effectiveness (PvE)

Rogues are a vital class to have on raids. They can easily access areas other classes can't, open locked doors and chests to save the raid time, sap humanoids, stunlock enemies and offtank them, and they have a variety of evasion and vanishing tactics to boost them to the point where they can off tank efficiently. Rogues have a high damage output and depending on their weapon setup and talent build they can easily lead the raid in Damage Per Second (DPS). It sounds like fun, but mastering the Rogue class isn't easy, in fact, there are so many rogues who don't know how to play that most people exclude rogues from groups because the chances of getting a "n00b" rogue are so high. Please see our Rogue Instance Guide for more information.

Rogue PVP Guide

Rogues can be a very strong PVP Class or they can be one of the worst. Every class can own every class it comes down to a few main things: Talent build, players skill, and gear. If you excel in all three areas you will never lose in a 1v1 PVP match no matter what class you are playing or what class you are playing against. Rogues have the ability to be "cheap". With Shadowstep they can now alternate targets in huge PVP Battles, shadowstep in, and kill another player in a single Ambush. Then they will run away and repeat the process. Rogue opening moves, poisons, and weapon setup can change if the Rogue has the advantage of initiating the fight. If a rogue is caught off guard it can be very tricky to turn the fight in your favor and you will have to rely mostly on your skill at that point (don't worry, if you are good, 95 percent of the players in World of Warcraft are N00BS).
